In today's blog I want to discuss what's involved in designing the perfect floor plan for your home. I encourage you to use the steps outlined below to ignite the heart of your home, infusing it with feeling, purpose, and harmony. Before you ever start putting pen to paper, it's important to reflect on your lifestyle and how the home you design will support and nurture you, your well being and your soul, now and in the future.

Step 1: Heart

Start by taking a look at what's really important to you. This section identifies the reason why you're building a home, the people and core values you hold near and dear, along with establishing what inspires you most. Plus, reflecting on your favorite things and describing your perfect day (without the worries of bills, jobs, etc.).

Questions to consider:

  • Why are you building a new home?
  • Who will be living in the home? (Present or Future; Short or Long Term)
  • What are your core values? (Expression, Individuality, Community, Service, etc.)
  • When and where do you feel most inspired and focused?
  • Describe your perfect day. What are your favorite things to do?

Step 2: Feeling

This is the time to stretch your imagination around how the spaces in your home can support your well-being in all the major areas of your life. You'll want to make sure the home you create reflects who you are and what makes you feel your best. Remember you can create anything you want, so create something you love.

Spaces to consider:

  • Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, Pantry, Butler's Pantry
  • Dining Room, Family Room, Formal Living Room
  • Study/Office, Home Theater, Wine Cellar, Nursery
  • Laundry Room, Home Gym, Safe Room, Foyer, Mud Room
  • Garage, Workshop, Powder Room, Storage Room, Pool Bath
  • Outdoor Living, Dining + Kitchen, Pool/Spa

Step 3: Purpose

This section establishes the purview of your new home. It includes specifics about house size, budget, and type of property. If you have distinct ideas for your new home as a whole, you'll document those thoughts here. This includes shape, number of levels, garage requirements, and styles to follow for inspiration or any to avoid.

Questions to consider:

  • What size & shape of house works best for your property, your budget, and your lifestyle?
  • Are there any features on your property that need to be highlighted?
  • Can any rooms from the previous exercise be combined into multi-purpose spaces?
  • What direction will your front door face?
  • Are there any features on your property or neighboring properties that need to be blocked or screened from view?
  • Any styles you're drawn to:
  • Any styles to be avoided:

Step 4: Harmony

This is where it gets real. Using the list of rooms you listed previously, you'll create clear-cut needs for each room and how they connect to one another. Use grid paper to sketch your ideas and document the room's position in the house. Plus, be sure to make notes about furniture and inspiration. Once complete, bring all the spaces together.

Considerations for each room:

  • Special Features or Focal Point
  • Position
  • Ambiance
  • Furniture + Decor
  • Inspiration
  • Function
  • Dimensions

As you move through these steps, remember to connect deeply with the future home you wish to create. The process of designing a home is not just about the physical structure but also about creating a space that supports your lifestyle, values, and dreams. Take your time, be thoughtful, and allow your heart to guide you in designing a home that is truly and uniquely yours.
